Government officials, shelter organisations and civil society representatives are calling for stronger cooperation in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
The call was made during the sixth National Shelter Indaba, held in Benoni under the theme “The Social Integration of GBVF Interventions.”
The annual gathering brings together people working with survivors of abuse to share experiences, discuss challenges and find better ways of supporting women and children affected by violence.
The National Shelter Indaba, which began in 2021, also provides an opportunity for shelters and government to discuss gaps in services and strengthen partnerships.
Speaking at the Indaba, Sibusiso Malope, Director responsible for the Victim Empowerment Programme at the Department of Social Development, said South Africa continues to face high levels of GBVF.
He said government departments and other stakeholders are working through different programmes focusing on prevention, law enforcement, care and support, funding, accountability and monitoring.
Tolerance and social cohesion were also highlighted as important in preventing violence and building safer communities.
The Department of Social Development leads Pillar 4 of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF, which focuses on response, care, support and healing for survivors.
The Indaba is expected to continue discussions on strengthening services for survivors and improving cooperation between government, shelters and community organisations.
