The Durban Business Fair (DBF) continues to cement its legacy as one of the City’s most powerful economic empowerment platforms, transforming small enterprises into scalable businesses, while reinforcing Durban’s reputation as a hub of trade and entrepreneurship.
This was evident following the resounding success of the 28th instalment of the DBF, held from 29 April to 2 May at the Durban Exhibition Centre and Durban ICC. Rooted in a history of inclusive economic growth, the Fair has evolved into a flagship municipal programme. It draws thousands of visitors and connects emerging businesses to real market opportunities.
For first-time exhibitor, Sithembile Ndlovu, founder of Mushroom Queen, the impact was immediate. Already supplying major retailers, she described the Fair as a catalyst for expansion. “It has opened doors to new suppliers and sparked promising deals”. Ndlovu said.
Gugu Nyakata of GM Aura perfumes, based in New Germany, recorded R4 000 in on-site sales, with bulk orders continuing to flow. “I am definitely coming back next year,” she said. Beyond sales, the Fair delivered life-changing opportunities. A total of R550 000 in bursaries was awarded by Newbridge Graduate Institute to 10 young entrepreneurs to pursue Diplomas in Customer Management.
The highly anticipated awards programme, held on the final day, recognised excellence in exhibition standards. Elo Interiors took first prize, receiving enterprise development support worth R50 000, along with additional benefits, including memberships to the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Proudly South African, as well as a Newbridge bursary and advertising support.
Marcus Mkhasibe secured second place, receiving enterprise development support worth R30 000, while Noor Scents took third place with support valued at R20 000.
All winners also received additional support, including First National Bank and iKhokha hampers, and Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry membership.
City’s Economic Development and Planning Chairperson, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, emphasised that all business and communities have to unite. “The Durban Business Fair is a testament to what can be achieved when government, private sponsors, and communities unite with a shared purpose. We extend our sincere gratitude to all partners for their unwavering support in uplifting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and to the public for supporting local businesses, ensuring that economic opportunities reach every corner of our city.” Ntuli said.
