A family’s decision to move their teenage son to a new school in the hope of keeping him safe has ended in tragedy. Siphosethu Jack, 16, was fatally stabbed inside a classroom at Kuyasa Senior Secondary School in Dimbaza. The alleged attacker is reportedly another learner. Siphosethu had recently been transferred to the school after his family became concerned about his safety at his previous school. Instead of finding the safe environment they had hoped for, the family is now mourning the loss of their son and grandson.
The incident has left the Dimbaza community shocked and raised fresh concerns about violence in schools. Social Development Minister Dina Pule and Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta have expressed their condolences to the family and condemned the violence. Minister Pule said the tragedy highlights the urgent need to make schools places where children can learn without fear.
“Our schools must be safe environments, free from violence and fear.” MEC Fanta said the incident had understandably left parents worried about the safety of their children. She called for schools, parents, community leaders and law enforcement agencies to work together to protect learners and create safer school environments.
For Siphosethu’s family, however, the issue is now painfully personal. They had tried to protect a child they loved by moving him to another school. He never got the chance to finish his education or build the future his family hoped for him. The tragedy has once again placed the spotlight on the need to confront violence among young people and ensure that schools remain places where children can learn, grow and feel safe.
