Durban Strengthens Position as Leading Tourism Destination
Durban once again took centre stage as the city welcomed delegates, investors, and exhibitors to Africa’s Travel Indaba2026, reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s leading tourism and events destinations.
Speaking at the official opening, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said the event highlights Durban’s growing importance in tourism, investment, and global connectivity under the theme “Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy.”
Xaba noted that expanded airline routes and continued investment in tourism infrastructure are helping attract both local and international visitors while creating new economic opportunities.
He described tourism as a powerful driver of economic growth, job creation, and social inclusion, adding that the Indaba continues to create opportunities for partnerships and market access for businesses and entrepreneurs.
The Mayor also highlighted Durban’s growing success in sports and cruise tourism. He said the city is preparing to host matches for the 2027 Cricket World Cup, further strengthening its reputation as a world-class sporting destination.
Xaba further praised the impact of the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, which has boosted cruise tourism and supported local businesses and township enterprises.
Delegates attending the Indaba were encouraged to explore KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches, wildlife, cultural heritage, and township tourism experiences as the province continues to position itself as a diverse tourism destination.
