Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, has called for science, technology and innovation to be used as practical tools to tackle South Africa’s most pressing challenges, including unemployment, inequality, poor service delivery and climate change.
Speaking at the launch of the country’s first National Science Month at the Vaal University of Technology’s Southern Gauteng Science and Technology Park, Gina said science should no longer be viewed as a field reserved for laboratories and academics. she said it must become central to economic transformation, industrialisation and improving the quality of life for all South Africans.
“Science is more than a driver of discovery. It is a powerful engine of economic transformation, industrialisation and national competitiveness. Through National Science Month, we are saying clearly that science, technology and innovation must be placed at the centre of government, education, industry and society,” Gina said.
The launch, attended by about 3 000 learners, students, parents, educators, researchers and innovators, marked the expansion of National Science Week.
More than 130 exhibitions from universities, science councils, government institutions, innovation agencies and private companies gave visitors hands-on experience of scientific research, technological innovation and career opportunities in the sector.
The winning teams received 3D-printed trophies produced at the university’s additive manufacturing centre, as well as an all-expenses-paid educational trip to science institutions in Cape Town.
Gina also unveiled the official National Science Month logo, designed by University of Zululand student Wandile Mgaga, whose entry was selected from 100 submissions received nationwide.
“You must never allow anyone to tell you that you cannot become a scientist. National Science Month is about ensuring that every child, parent and community knows that science, technology and innovation are for everyone,” she said.
National Science Month will run throughout July with science engagement activities taking place across the country, while North-West University will host the 2027 edition after officially receiving the baton at the launch.
