EThekwini Municipality has reassured residents that comprehensive safety and security measures remain firmly in place across the City.
The Municipality also clarified that the application for a planned march by local organisation, March and March, was not denied, but that alternative route proposals were made in the interest of public safety. The Durban Metro Police Service is working closely with the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to maintain a visible presence throughout eThekwini, including townships, business districts, major transport routes, and other strategic locations. Law enforcement officers remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond swiftly to any incident that may threaten public safety, public infrastructure, or the uninterrupted functioning of the City.
On 25 June, key law enforcement stakeholders met with representatives of March and March to discuss and agree on appropriate safety and security measures. During these engagements, alternative starting and ending points were proposed to facilitate the march while minimising potential safety risks. The Municipality noted that these proposals were declined by the organisers.
Following further assessment, the organisers’ proposed alternative endpoint was also found to present significant safety and security risks. Consequently, law enforcement authorities advised that the march should not proceed along unauthorised routes. Residents are encouraged to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their daily activities as normal. Members of the public are also urged to report any suspicious or unlawful activities that may pose a threat to public safety.
EThekwini Municipality remains committed to protecting lives, safeguarding public infrastructure, and ensuring that peace, safety, and public order prevail throughout the City. The Municipality will continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to uphold the safety and wellbeing of all residents and visitors.
